Are you a college student who just found out you’re pregnant and feel unsure of what to do?
Discovering an unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming. You might feel like you have no support, especially if your partner isn’t on board, and this was never part of your plan. The mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, shock, and confusion—can make it hard to think clearly. It’s natural to feel pressured to make a quick decision just to ease the stress.
On our podcast, birth doula Sophia Hartman shared her perspective on navigating this difficult situation. Her first piece of advice?
Give yourself time. This is a big decision that shouldn’t be rushed. Abortion may seem like a quick fix, but it’s important to recognize that it can have long-term emotional effects, including post-abortion trauma, which many women don’t anticipate.
Take a moment to pause and breathe. Your life is not over. Allow yourself to process your emotions fully. Rushing a decision out of fear or panic won’t bring peace. You have nine months before the baby arrives, giving you time to carefully consider your options.
Think about what motherhood might mean for you—the challenges and the unexpected joy it could bring. It might not align with the timing you had envisioned, but life’s most beautiful moments often come from unexpected situations.
Remember, you are not alone. There are more resources and support systems available than you might realize, from friends and family to community organizations. Adoption is also a path to consider if you’re not ready to raise a child but want to give them a future.
This decision is one that will hugely impact the rest of your life. Take your time and remember that you are capable of anything - including being a mom when you didn't think you were ready.
